How to Decorate a Kid’s Room

A child’s room is a fun decorating project to tackle. But with all the design inspirations floating around, it can get pretty overwhelming.

In the age of Pinterest and home decorating sites, it’s so easy to get excited over this particular project—and easy to get a case of ‘analysis paralysis’. However, as long as you keep these basic guidelines in mind, you’re sure to end up with a fun, beautiful space your child will love.

1. When it comes to colors, think long-term.

Don’t limit yourselves to pastel blue and pink. Consider a color story that can serve your child all the way to their teenage years. Think about colors that can be combined in new ways so that the room is age-appropriate as your child gets older.

2. Invest in good furniture.

Look for pieces that can easily move forward into a more mature space. For example, a beautiful, sturdy dresser is appropriate for any life stage and is sure to last a lifetime.

3. Consider different types of storage.

It’s good to think about storage in different levels. First, you have your proper closet storage, then your super-easy storage bins like trunks or baskets, and your everyday items that need to be tucked away occasionally.

4. Use the space wisely.

Create sections or zones for different activities like sleep, work, and play. A fun idea is to dedicate a large section of a wall in cork tiles where your child can keep artwork or posters without damaging painted walls.

5. Check out wall decals.

If you’re unsure about doing a full-blown mural, stencils or removable wall decals are great ways to add a nice pop of color and a touch of whimsy to a room.
