How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets

Posted on June 9, 2015

Kitchen cabinets are an indispensable part of your home’s food factory – everyone’s favorite part of the house. But they can drag your kitchen spirit down if they look worn and disheveled. Update your kitchen paint colors by giving your cabinets a new look!

The idea of redecorating your kitchen can be a little overwhelming, but don’t worry. A well-decorated kitchen doesn’t mean you have to spend extra on additional cabinets or shelves. Want to give your kitchen a big makeover without breaking the bank? All you have to do is repaint your kitchen cabinets for an updated look. Here’s how you can choose your kitchen paint colors with the help of Island Premium Paints:

  1. Plan it out.

The first mistake you’re going to make in any project is diving into it without properly planning out the steps you’re going to take. So before you begin, plan ahead and visualize what you want your kitchen to look like. Pick out your kitchen paint color palette and make sure it still blends with the existing design of your kitchen.

  1. Remove cabinet hardware.

To avoid making a mess when you start painting, unscrew all your cabinet hardware – the knobs, handles, and closures.

  1. Clean and prepare cabinets before painting.

Before you prime and paint your cabinets, it’s important to make sure they’re clean for a neat finish. Once you’re done cleaning and the cabinets are dry, sand the surfaces with coarse sandpaper for a rough texture. Remove the dust with a wet cloth and allow to dry.

  1. Apply primer onto cabinets.

Prime your cabinets with Island Wood Primer & Sealer to all the surfaces you will paint with a roller. For the areas that the roller will not be able to reach, use a small paint brush.

  1. Paint the cabinets!

Allow the primer to dry and then proceed to painting. If you have a busy kitchen, then your cabinets should be able to endure wear and tear. It is recommended to use tough paint like the Tex-a-Kote Flat 2800FL White and apply your final coat after about four hours. Allow to dry.

  1. Reattach hardware.

When everything is dry, reattach the hardware you removed or purchase new ones to complete the look.
